What distinguishes transgender people from transsexuals? - People who are not comfortable with their genetic gender are described as transgender. Women who are genetically clearly assigned feel more like men. They often dress accordingly. Genetic men secretly or openly take on the role of a woman. They feel comfortable with fake breasts and feminine clothing. They usually don't think about gender reassignment surgery. A distinction must be made between transgender people who cross the boundaries of the opposite sex through crossdressing and people who are classified as transsexual. Some also simply call them “queer”, i.e. beyond what is perceived as “normal”.

Many - but by no means all - transsexuals will sooner or later seek gender reassignment surgery. You feel like you are in the wrong body or as transident - more precisely: as trans-ident. This term is also used as a synonym for transgender people or trans-sexual people. Transident is someone whose body does not match the gender that the person concerned was naturally given. Surgical adjustment is therefore more likely to correct the perceived false identity.

What defines gender?
Those who lose their birth gender without gender reassignment surgery are also referred to with incorrect terms. That complicates the situation. The frequently used terms reject transsexual people. Some see themselves as intersexual, i.e. as floating between the two sexes due to anatomical, genetic or hormonal factors. Each term label only captures aspects of the problem. Any terminology should therefore be treated with caution. It usually serves more to discriminate and differentiate than to provide a helpful classification.

Crossdressers are people who don't dress according to their own gender. The reason why this happens is not assessed. Fashion reasons, increased pleasure through a role reversal, political protest against sexual stereotypes, the desire to dress up or real identity problems can play a role in crossdressing.
